James Springall (b.1977) is a British artist who uses collage to create alternate narratives and understandings of popular culture. Drawing from his vast collection of old books, magazines and printed ephemera he employs humour, tragedy and social commentary in equal measures to create a visual world that sails far from the banality of our image-saturated culture. This reordering of existing material helps keep forgotten images alive whilst giving them an entirely new identity, ultimately offering the viewer an unexpected encounter with otherness. Springall's work is internationally collected and has been shown at the Saatchi Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts. He is currently co-curating an exhibition of contemporary collage art for Jealous Gallery and The Weird Show.
