Miriam Elia

At the age of two years one month, Miriam uttered her first words: Video Installation. Less than a year later, she won the Tumble-tots Turner Prize for her seminal piece ‘Bits of Crayon in Mouth’ (1985). A multi-disciplinary artist and Sony-nominated comedian, Miriam trained at Goldsmiths College and the Royal College of Art and began doing stand-up after graduating. She wrote and starred in comedy sketch show A Series Of Psychotic Episodes on Radio 4 and was commissioned to make five short films for Channel 4’s Random Acts. Her first graphic novel, The Diary of Edward The Hamster 1990-1990 (2012), which she collaborated with her brother Ezra on, chronicles the sadly brief life of their pet hamster. In 2014, Miriam released We Go To The Gallery, a satirical comment on contemporary art and an homage to Ladybird books. Penguin found her imitation of the trademarked Ladybird style to be a bit too accomplished for their liking and prevented her from selling any more books. Miriam used this as an incentive to redesign We Go To The Gallery and is proud to release her new book for the “Dung Beetle reading scheme”.
