“One of the most important exhibitions of contemporary collage art”
- Graffica
The International Weird Collage Show will be put on by The Weird Show, a collective that organise group exhibitions focusing on contemporary collage art
as a medium. Established in 2010, they have since held 13 exhibitions around the world and are proudly celebrating their 14th edition at Jealous Gallery
in London.
Previous exhibitions have showcased some of the worlds most exciting and disruptive artists working in contemporary collage, and the London show will
be no different. Focusing on artists who search for new ways of approaching the medium, the exhibition aims to leave the clichés behind in order
to help redefine the way collage is made and conceived. The show will be curated by Weird Show founder Max-o-matic and London based artist James
Springall and will feature some of the most cutting-edge contemporary collage out there, with a selection of artists from around the world that
explore a wide variety of approaches and techniques.
Featuring 25 artists in total, the International Weird Collage Show will present a large variety of handmade collage art alongside limited edition
prints. The opening night on Feb 1st will see the artist and soundtrack composer Maxwell Sterling perform a live sound collage based on his highly
acclaimed record Hollywood Medieval, released in 2017 and for which the artists' mother, post-punk collage legend Linder Sterling, provided the
sleeve artwork.

INFO ON SELECTED ARTISTS
Sergei Sviatchenko (Denmark/Ukraine)
“One of the most influential innovators of modern collage.” - Gestalten
Sergei Sviatchenko was born in Ukraine and lives and works in Viborg, Denmark. A provocateur in the world of contemporary art, Sviatchenko’s collages and
paintings have been exhibited globally. His work explores everyday objects with the use of photography and collage elements, which are turned into
scarp contoured, sculptural expressions to highlight the process of navigating through the rapid flow of visual impressions that the contemporary consumer
is constantly confronted with.
In our world of sensory overload, Sviatchenko stands out as an artist with unique vision. The first compre- hensive collection of his collage and painting was documented in the book Everything Goes Right & Left.
If You Want It, (Gestalten, Berlin). Then, in October 2014, Sergei Sviatchenko: Collages (SCHLEBRÜGGE. EDITOR, Austria) was published. Edited by Rick Poynor, a prominent British writer, lecturer and curator, specializing in visual culture, it gathers Sviatchenko’s most significant work from the past 10 years alongside little seen collages from his early years in Ukraine.

Sarah Hardacre (Manchester, UK)
Sarah Hardacre (Manchester, UK)
Sarah Hardacre is a visual artist and print maker living and working in Manchester. Through paper collage and silkscreen print, Hardacre’s practice explores
the architectural legacies of post-war, post- industrial housing development; estates of single class segregation and islands of failed Utopias. Her
work questions the effects of urban regeneration, notions of privacy and how structures designed to induce collectivism have instead left a legacy
of alienation, serving to marginalise working class communities and in particular working class women.
Sarah is represented by London based gallery Paul Stolper with whom she had two major solo shows in 2012, ‘Heaven With the Gates Off’ in London and ‘The
Vanity of Small Differences’ in Oslo, Norway. In 2014, Hardacre’s print work was included in ‘UNDEREXPOSED’, a major survey of female artists and the
medium of print over the last two decades, at the University of Kent alongside Barbara Hepworth, Tracy Emin, Cornelia Parker and Bridget Riley. In
2015, she curated the group exhibition ‘Superior Goods and Household Gods’ at Manchester’s Castlefield Gallery. Her work is regularly exhibited internationally
and is included in the public collections of the British Museum and British Council and private collections worldwide including Damien Hirst’s Murderme
collection in London.

Ashkan Honarvar (Trondheim, Norway)
Born in Shiraz, Iran, Ashkan Honarvar now lives and works in Trondheim, Norway. He has had solo exhibitions in The Netherlands, Italy, Canada and the USA.
Honarvar uses collage as a medium to help us reflect on the contradictions of life.
"Honarvar ́s collages speak to humanity ́s intrinsic obliviousness, heightened by vanity and abused by others. We think we know ourselves and the world around us, but how much do we really understand? Just as Honarvar ́s figures are obliterated, severed, and reorganized by him, we are often at the mercy of circumstances outside our control. Ignorance of our places in the world can impair our abilities to deal with these unique circumstances." -
Annabel Osberg
“...Honarvar plays the role of curator and philosopher... all to create his own visual world, lush and nightmarish. In the end, his work celebrates the perishable beauty of human life while exposing its absurdity.” -
Art critic Bridget Gleesonwide

ABOUT THE CURATORS
James Springall is a British artist who uses collage to create alternate narratives and understandings of modern life. He employs humour, tragedy and social commentary in equal measures to evoke a visual world that sails far from the banality of our image-saturated culture. His work is internationally collected and has been shown at the Saatchi Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts.
