JEALOUS ARE PLEASED TO PRESENT A NEW BODY OF WORK BY ROWAN NEWTON

‘Isolation: Self-Imposed’ is a series of work that has evolved during the past year to capture the personal and immediate experiences felt throughout the pandemic. The series is inspired by Newton's reflections on his own artistic practice, which continued almost unchanged, despite the world around him coming to a standstill.

This self-imposed isolation is an important part of his creative practice and the time he spends with his paintings, looking, reviewing and refining them ultimately leads to the finished works on display today.

”We can imagine ourselves as the subject or we can become an onlooker, imagining what the person in the painting is thinking or feeling.”
Rowan Newton, June 2021

The series 'Forgotten faces', are miniature portraits of the artists friends, painted at a time when we couldn't see our friends and family. The blurred more abstract style of the portraits emphasise the distance we felt from our loved ones due to this period of isolation, and the grid like format could hint towards the way we became used to seeing faces on video calls.

The larger paintings show his subjects isolated within the canvas. They are always alone and often gazing beyond the frame. Newton allows the viewers to create their own narrative for each painting and provides an opportunity for self reflection.

“I want the viewer to look at something that they have seen a thousand times before, but experience it completely differently”

Rowan Newton, June 2021

Rowan Newton is a painter exploring the complexity of human emotion through body language and expressive paint application.

With single character compositions, Rowans figures are as complex emotionally, as they are physically contrasting. Bold and vivid, colours combine through scrapes and sweeps as he drags his mixed medias of oil and spray paint over the canvas. The uplifting dynamism owned by the paint collides with the unassuming composition of his forms; a darker edge emerges…

The gaze of the voyeur is irrelevant, as his characters recoil and turn away from our stares, an ambivalent nonchalance to our presence is created. Though beautiful and elegant they make no attempt to seduce us with their naked forms, they are unconcerned with you. As we move past the beauty of colour, we are left with subtle suggestions of darkness, pain and anxiety, moments which create for the viewer a context to reflect on their own unique experiences the same

It is this stark collision of attitude and approach which really typifies Rowan’s style.

“I want the viewer to look at something that they have seen a thousand times before, but experience it completely differently”

Growing up in Brixton, Rowan developed an early fascination with an urban landscape constructed of graffiti and billboard advertisements. These gritty layers and textures continue to influence his work in the studio as he tirelessly works to blend them in new and conflicting ways.

Rowan has been painting professionally since 2004.
